He keeps that automation honest: it handles routine work, keeps a record, and hands off to a person when it needs one. Hunter's question is whether the system is correct; Michael's is whether it is clear to the person it happened to. Both have to be yes before anything ships.

Engineering is the family trade on every side, several generations deep. Taking things apart until they made sense came well before it was a job.
